How it works at the till

  1. Find an item on your list that a nearby store is advertising for less this week, in the same brand and size.
  2. Bring the ad. At Superstore and No Frills the online listing is fine; at Save-On-Foods, PriceSmart and FreshCo it has to be the flyer, or a screenshot of it.
  3. Show it at the till or customer service before the ad expires. The store checks the item is identical and applies its own limit.

What these pages are, and are not

Everything here is information, not a guarantee. Whether a store matches a price is entirely that store’s decision, made under its own policy, its own list of local competitors, its own quantity limits and the judgment of its staff at checkout. Store policies and limits can change at any time without notice, and stores of the same banner can apply them differently. The policy terms shown are our reading of what each retailer has published, checked on the date shown, and may be out of date. The items listed are ones we found advertised for less at another store when we last checked; prices change daily and an ad may have ended by the time you shop. Savings percentages are estimates from those advertised prices. Satiafy is not affiliated with any retailer and does not guarantee that any match will be honoured. Confirm the current policy with the store before relying on it.

Which grocery stores price match?
Of the fifteen banners we track in Metro Vancouver and London, Ontario, five match a competitor's advertised price on the identical item: No Frills, PriceSmart Foods, Save-On-Foods, Real Canadian Superstore and FreshCo. No Frills and Real Canadian Superstore accept the competitor's current ad, including the online listing. PriceSmart Foods, Save-On-Foods and FreshCo accept the competitor's current flyer only, shown at customer service or the till. Each banner's page lists what is matchable there this week.
Which grocery stores do not price match?
Loblaws, Your Independent Grocer, Sobeys, Safeway, Thrifty Foods, Metro, Food Basics, Urban Fare, Fresh St. Market and Marketplace IGA either publish no price-match policy or say their prices are simply always low. Absence of a policy is not the same as a published refusal, so ask at the store if it matters to you.
What counts as the identical item?
The same brand and the same size, sold by the same measure. A different pack size, a different flavour, or a store brand standing in for a national brand is not identical. Two of the policies also require the same price basis, so an item sold by weight at one store cannot be matched to a per-item price at another. Produce, meat and bakery items with no brand are handled differently by each policy.
Do I need the paper flyer?
At Save-On-Foods, PriceSmart Foods and FreshCo, yes: the competitor's current flyer, or a screenshot of it on your phone, shown before it expires. Real Canadian Superstore and No Frills accept the competitor's current ad, including the online listing.
Is a price match guaranteed?
No. Every match is decided by the store under its own policy, its own list of local competitors, its own limits, and the judgment of its staff at checkout. Policies change without notice. These pages report what the published policies say and which items we found advertised cheaper this week; they are information, not a promise, and we are not affiliated with any retailer.
